Day One

The builder, yesterday, marked out the site ready to dig footings. When I arrived this morning, (-5 degrees and a frost that looked like snow) formwork was being made, the backhoe was on site and the bolts for the steel piers were to be put in place.

Already there was a hitch, the steel company had made the pier plates too big and the bolts would not be able to be positioned correctly. It meant a trip back into town for the builder so he could fix the problem.

By the end of the day, (we viewed it in the dark), the footings had been dug, the rio in place, formwork done and the bolts put in position.

More tommorrow!

The Idea is Born

In 2008 a friend and I were discussing affordable housing and I had always said I would like to build a shed and make it a cute house. My friend suggested shipping containers.

He pointed out that they are immediate, watertight, vermon proof and don't need a slab. The idea was born.

After much research on the web I was amazed at the quality and beauty of shipping container homes. In many instances money seemed to be no object. I on the other hand had a very tight budget so began designing floor plans which would be achievable for me.

With my plans drawn up I went to council ready to do battle. This is a small town and I wanted to build in a village. I had decided to build on engineer designed peers because I was on a sloping block and did not want a cutout.

Council were suprisingly open to the idea. Their only stipulation was that it looked permanent and that I covered in the roof area and under floor area. They, in fact, seemed quiet excited and wanted me to show them the project as it progressed.

I found a builder who was willing to be flexible and a shipping container supplier who were happy to paint my containers where and what colour I wanted (for a price of course). We are now due to start footings in the next week or two and the shipping container delivery date has been confirmed.
